Hewlett Packard 16602A Logic Analyzer
I purchased this 102 channel Logic analyzer from Italy through eBay as working, although I had to re-install the software to make it usable, for which I had to purchase an SCSI CD-ROM drive.
Internally it's an HP PA-RISC based computer running HP-UX with the logic analyzer software running on an X-windows server.
This makes it an ideal troubleshooting tool for my retro work:
- At a maximum sampling rate of 250mhz, it's much faster than any computers I work on
- 102 channels is more than enough to analyse even large 24-bit address / 16-bit data busses
- Because the software can run on any X server, I can run it directly on my MacBook or Linux machines
- No integrated screen means more available desk space
Work done:
- Inspect internals
- Re-install OS
Planned work:
Maybe one day I will do the following modifications to reduce the (substantial) noise:
- Replace fans with low noise versions
- Replace HDD with SCSI2SD
Exterior inspection:
The exterior was in good shape, just needed a good cleaning
Interior
The inside was pretty much dust free and in great shape:
At some point in the future, I might replace the fans with low noise versions and the hard disk with a SCSI2SD to reduce the amount of noise.
Re-installation
To re-install the system, I purchased an SCSI CD-ROM drive, which I temporarily installed inside an external enclosure:
After some initial failures, the installation was successful:
