Commodore Amiga 500
I purchased this Amiga 500 locally on an online marketplace, it was described as having a faulty keyboard.
Work done:
- Repair faulty keyboard
- Clean case and keyboard
Planned work:
- Install PiStorm
Exterior inspection:
The case was quite yellowed and dirty, but otherwise still in good shape:
Interior inspection:
Inside, the computer was in overall good condition, although the shield was rusted:
Keyboard repair:
When I powered on the computer, I found that it generally seemed to work, but the keyboard didn't respond at all and the caps lock key remained red at all times.
On the Amiga 500, the keyboard is controlled by a MOS 6570-036 with a 555 timer being used as a watchdog timer and reset circuit. There is a known issue where if the capacitor controlling the watchdog timer goes bad, the caps lock light will blink regularly.
This led me to check the reset signal on the keyboard controller, which was permanently low (active). After checking the related capacitors and resistor, I determined that the 555 times was faulty:
After replacing the 555 timer, the keyboard started working properly again.
Keyboard cleaning
As usually the case with computers from this time, the keyboard was very dirty and was in desperate need of cleaning:
